MAK @ ITALIAN TOURING CHAMPIONSHIP

Excellent result in the home race, at the Monza Autodrome, for the MAK-sponsored I-Drive Racing team.

In the final round of the FX Series, the team from Cernusco Lombardone excelled in its category by setting the fastest time in qualifying and winning race one.

The Meratese team took to the track with drivers Paolo Corradin and Stefano Fecchio. Under the eyes of sponsors and friends, the two drivers were able to excel in the qualifying session, knocking three tenths off the second Renault Clio in the standings, that of Fabio Marcelloni.

In race one it was not easy for Corradin, who got off to a good start and held the top position for a few laps, pursued by Marcelloni. The latter, taking advantage of the slipstream, managed to overtake I-Drive’s Clio number 12 towards the middle of the race, with Corradin quick to stay in his slipstream and wait for the right moment. The moment came shortly afterwards, at the braking of the first chicane. The driver from Varese, once back in the lead, was able to continue undisturbed, bringing home an excellent first place in his category.

In race two, however, Stefano Fecchio was unlucky: already on the alignment lap his car had some technical problems, which the team tried to remedy in the few minutes available on the grid before the start. Unfortunately the team did not make it and Fecchio had to leave the grid, leaving any hope of repeating the result of the first race.

Half-satisfied, of course, is Luca Bonfanti, Team Manager of I-Drive, who does not hide his bitterness at what happened before race two: “Until the problem at the start of race two, we were having a fantastic weekend. Corradin and Fecchio had an excellent free practice, followed by an exceptional qualifying that allowed us to start ahead of our main rival, Fabio Marcelloni. In race one Corradin was very good at avoiding contact in the funnel of the first chicane and at the same time managed to keep the category lead. Even when Marcelloni, with the advantage of the slipstream, managed to overtake him, Paolo kept calm and cool and was able to retaliate almost immediately, and then flew towards the chequered flag. We could have replicated the result in race two too, if only we had managed to start. Fecchio encountered some technical problems on the way out of the pits and we were unable to fix the car in time for the start. Now we will look into what happened, very quickly, because next Sunday we will already be protagonists at Misano Adriatico, in the Peroni Racing Weekend. Corradin’s victory is in any case a great result, and I am really very happy because it allows us to end our second racing season in the best possible way. I am doubly happy also because at Monza, our home race, sponsors and friends were present and it was great to win in front of them”.

Paolo Corradin is also very happy with the result: “We were fast all weekend but I never thought I could aim to win in this way, with this authority. The biggest difficulty was holding the position at the start, then I concentrated on avoiding mistakes and even when Marcelloni overtook me, I managed the race well and take back the position easily. It’s a shame about what happened to Fecchio because he too could have repeated my result, the car had been perfect up to that point”.

Queste invece le parole di Stefano Fecchio: “Sono davvero molto dispiaciuto per quanto accaduto nella seconda Stefano Fecchio, on the other hand, had this to say: “I am really very sorry for what happened in the second race on Sunday. I was really charged up, also because the car had been going really well up to that moment. Unfortunately as soon as I came out of the pits I felt something was wrong and as soon as I got to the grid I asked the team to check. Unfortunately time was short and we couldn’t fix the car in time. It was a shame because the conditions were right for us to do well. I am relieved to have seen Paolo Corradin’s great race, his victory is confirmation that our car is really competitive!”.
